[John is tired. It has been hours since he received Geralt’s message, and even then he had not yet been in bed but merely preparing himself for the thought of it. He suspects the sun has long risen by now, although he has no real way of telling the time down here. Just a feeling that it has been a long while and the agony of understanding it will be longer still.

Once the arguments amongst the mages at the warding have settled long enough that he feels comfortable stepping away, and he has checked in with his fellow guardsmen who have become trapped down here with him, making several sweeps of the safe room as it were to establish a mental picture of the place and its occupants, John finally allows himself a moment to breathe. And reach out to those he suspects might need to hear from him. Who probably would have liked to hear from him earlier, but that is neither here nor there.]

[ Preoccupied by the crowded rooms, his own people, the fact that he greatly dislikes being underground listening to the chaos above, Geralt has little opportunity to look in on those outside Cadens. He hasn't even spoken to Yen. His presumption is she will contact him once she's made it.

So he is grateful to hear from John. Hardly surprising that he was too late. When does news ever arrive at the right time? ]

[John doesn’t know how much of their present situation Geralt is aware of, beyond what Istredd had shared on the network, although he knows he has been preoccupied these last few hours. He cannot imagine that others would have taken so long as himself to share news of what has transpired and for that to spread to Geralt. Still…]

[John had been busy himself but he had not heard from Geralt the whole time he had been (almost literally) putting out fires and attempting to keep the peace amongst those trapped together with him here in this place. Not that he supposes he could not simply have been preoccupied, and yet. That does not seem entirely in character for him.]
